3rd Burn - Burning Man 2018

My third year at burning man was no less exciting or meaningful than the 2 prior years. It remains an extremely unique place with a palpable sense of immediacy. There is no expectation to have to be or do anything at any specific time. However, it is also such a huge city with so many things to experience that major FOMO can occur.  You constantly hear about so many unique things happening, but you have to accept that no matter how hard you try there is no way you'll see or do it all.  Every experience is unique. You must not only choose your own adventure, but accept it as well. The digital detox is also a huge factor that makes it such a unique week. It's a reminder that there is no logical reason to be checking my phone countless times every day.

This year, I only brought my phone out a few times to capture videos to in an attempt to live more in the moment. The song in this video for example was heard heading back to camp from a sunrise set and being out all night. We were riding our bikes past an art car with a DJ playing this song and it was a perfect melody in that moment.  We stopped to listen for a bit, and I didn't take a single photo or video but the memory is ingrained forever.

There's a constant battle between wanting to conserve memories forever but there is also something very satisfying about not capturing a moment with a video and knowing that you must cherish it right then and there.  It feels different. Jury is still out which feeling is better over time but just like everything else, having a good balance is likely best. The final clip in the video is a reminder to slow down and enjoy the small things in life.  Special thanks to all of my fellow 'Ultimate Celebration' camp mates that contributed to our shared photo/video album so I could put together another video for my Third Burn!
